🐲 A LOOK AT THE DRAGONS…
In recent seasons the Catalans Dragons have established themselves as a true contender, reaching two Grand Finals but coming up short in both.
It was a tough 2024 campaign for the French side, who finished outside of the Play-Off spots. With a strong recruitment drive for 2025, the Dragons plan on remaining one of the contenders this year, with a squad that is littered with talent.

Big name signings saw the likes of Nick Cotric, Elliott Whitehead, Luke Keary and Tevita Pangai Junior all make the move to Perpignan from the NRL, with Super League players Oli Partington and Tommy Makinson (you might have heard of him) also joining Les Dracs.
All those names joined a squad that had Sam Tomkins, Julian Bousquet, Ben Garcia, Alrix Da Costa, Theo Fages and many more known talents. It is clear to see why Catalans were being widely tipped for a big year.

It has been a mixed start to the 2025 season for McNamara’s men, but they look to have turned a corner and challenging as they expected to now.
The new year began with a trip to The Shay where Halifax Panthers impressed and looked to be almost creating a very early Challenge Cup shock, however they fell to a 0-14 thanks to two match saving second half tries by Catalans, who looked to not be firing just yet.
That rocky start continued with a shock home loss to Hull FC in Round 1 of Betfred Super League, only scoring one try too. Two more losses both away from home followed to Warrington Wolves and Leigh Leopards, putting a bit of early season pressure on the Dragons.

However, they are now on a three-match winning run after a battling 11-0 home victory over Leeds Rhinos for their first two league points of the year, which was the spark they may have needed. They cruised past Championship side Featherstone Rovers to go into the Challenge Cup Quarter Finals in front of their own supporters 46-18. Last time out, Catalans put in arguably their best performance of the year so far, away at The Jungle in poor rainy conditions and running out 4-26 victors.
So, with the Dragons on a winning run and the Saints heading into their territory, Catalans will be very much up for this coming game on Friday night. Matches between the two clubs in recent years have always delivered a spectacle, a bruising one at that too.
The Saints will need to be bang up for this one, as we look to shake off last week’s very narrow loss and build form before the Challenge Cup Quarter Final.
Three to watch
- Sam Tomkins – now back playing after an early season knock, the fullback appears to be as dangerous as ever, registering 14 points in the Dragons’ win over the Tigers last time out
- Luke Keary – a three-time NRL Premiership winner, the veteran half has a lot to offer the Dragons not only with his style of play but his rugby league brain too
- Tevita Pangai Junior – a towering Tongan prop who is at the height of his powers, proven with a bulldozing score in the last round
