Jake went to Thelwall Primary School before moving on to Lymm High School.  He then attended Warrington College to complete his two year joiner apprenticeship and now works at Hurst Limited in Warrington.

Q.         How did you get involved in rugby league?

A.         My mates were playing rugby league at Woolston Rovers and asked me to go down with them. So my mum and dad took me down to the Club when I was nine and I immediately enjoyed it and took to the game.

Q.         Who was your coach at the Club?

A.         Rob Kelly was my first coach there and during that first year I played in various positions all over the field.

Q.        So in your second season you established a position with in the team?

A.         Yes I began playing regularly in the second row under Rob who was my coach until I was eleven. He then moved to coach at Rylands Sharks and I also moved to Rylands as well. I continued being coached by Rob until I was sixteen and then the side folded and I went and played at Blackbrook Royals for one season were I was coached by Andy Fairhurst. The move to the Royals came after I had signed for the Warrington Wolves and they found me another club to play for.

Q.         How did you get picked up by the Wolves?

A.         After playing for the Warrington ‘Town Team‘ at eleven I moved on into the Warrington Service Area side and I was signed for the Wolves on their scholarship scheme when I was thirteen. I was coached there by Vinny Webb and I continued playing at second row.

Q.         Did you attend the RFL Regional Camps or collect representative honours?

A.         I attended the Regional Camps for three years and in my final year at Under 16s. I also went to the RFL National Camp. From this camp I was selected to play for England Under 16s and I played against France home and away .We won both our games

Q.         Who were your teammates at the Royals and did you win any trophies at the Club?

A.         Danny Fairhurst, Steve Tyrer and Adam Twamley who are all here at the Saints played in that team. During that season, the Club won the BARLA National Cup, the League Cup and the North West Counties League Championship.

Q.         What happened next?

A.         Following on from the scholarship with Warrington I signed a professional contract with the Club, playing there for two seasons in the Under 18 and 21s team. I left my contract a year early and gave up playing rugby league as I became disillusioned with the game to be honest.

Q.         What did you do then?

A.         I went to play amateur rugby union at Lymm Rugby Union Club for the Open Age side where some of my friends played and during my time there I played in the centre or in the back row.

Q.         How did you arrive at the Saints?

A.         After the one season at Lymm my contract commitments to Warrington had finished and I contacted Mike Rush who I knew was involved at the Saints. I was asked to come down to the Club for a trial and I had a successful one. I signed for the Club on a ‘pay as you play contract’ and I am hoping to sign a further contract next year.

Q.         You’re now playing for the Reserve Team Championship side, are you still in the second row?

A.         Yes that’s right, it’s my first season in the team and to date I’m playing at either prop or loose forward. I have played in all the games this season and we are currently doing very well.

Q.         Do you have any role models?

A.         Nathan Hindmarsh of Parramata Eels.

Q.         What are your future ambitions?

A.         I would like to go as far as I can in rugby league earning a full time professional contract and I would like to play in Super League for the Saints. It would be great to pick up international honours in the future although that is a long way down the road.
