Liverpool Tag Rugby World Cup A Success

LIVERPOOL was once again taken over by Rugby League when more than 300 school children took part in the annual Liverpool Schools Tag Rugby World Cup.

The 16th Liverpool World Cup saw a fantastic spectacle of rugby league with great teamwork, ability and sportsmanship.

And it was Booker Avenue Junior School who lifted the coveted trophy after defeating St. Sebastian’s CP school in a tight final.

The final was a closely fought contest – tied one a piece at full time – but it was Booker Avenue who scored the Golden Try with a fantastic piece of running and side-stepping which saw the attacker beat three players to score the decisive try.

The other awards on the day were Prenton Primary beat Gilmour Primary in the Plate Final.

Prenton primary also picked up the fair play award.

The two outstanding players of the tournament where Ruby Davies (Bishop Eaton) who picked up best girl and Taylor Moss (King David) - best boy.

The annual event is organised in partnership with Merseyside Fire & Rescue service who spend months delivering tag rugby league sessions in school along with Community Saints.

Mike Hagen, Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Merseyside Fire & Rescue said: “This event continues to impress, the work of the Fire Service and Community Saints helps the world cup to run superbly. The result of the hard work is 30 teams playing rugby league. The coaching has helped to engage more than 3,000 young people. It was fantastic to see those skills on show.”

The entire Saints squad made the journey to Liverpool University Playing Fields to watch the action.

Prop James Graham said: “I’ve been coming to this tournament for a number of years now and the standard has increased every year. There were some great plays and the teamwork on show was outstanding.”

Community Saints officiated on the day and assisted in the running and organising of the day.

Paul Foster (Community Saints Coach) said: “This tournament has grown and grown over the years, it is a testament to the years of hard work that has taken place in Liverpool. The standard of rugby league was very impressive.”

There are now three Liverpool based development squads which are Liverpool Storm, Liverpool Lions and Kirkby Cougars.

All participants were encouraged to join the three clubs.
