Scully to start Bupa Great Edinburgh Run
Rugby League legend and former Great Britain captain Paul Sculthorpe will this Sunday (3 May) be one of the star names helping to start the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run which takes place in the city to coincide with engage Super League’s Magic Weekend.
More than 10,000 runners, a record for the event, are expected to take to the streets of Edinburgh on Sunday for the scenic 10km route. Star runners include Kenyan world record holder Micah Kogo, defending champion Bernard Kepyeg and Latvia's three times Edinburgh champion Jelena Prokopcuka.
Hundreds of Rugby League fans in the Scottish capital to see seven games of engage Super League at Murrayfield have also signed up for the race. All will be electronically tagged with the team they support and Super League sponsors engage will reward the fastest male and female supporters with two VIP tickets to October’s Grand Final at Old Trafford.
The engage Super League club with the fastest fans will also receive a trophy after the event.
Paul Sculthorpe said: “It’s an honour to be asked to start such an important race and underlines just how much the city of Edinburgh is getting behind the Magic Weekend.
“Although I’m starting the race I won’t be running the 10km, I’ll leave that to the fans who I’m sure will take great enjoyment from running around one of Europe’s finest cities. They’ll all have to be sharp though as the first game at Murrayfield on Sunday kicks off at 12.30pm!”
The race starts and finishes at the George IV Bridge with the elite women’s race starting at 10.15. This is followed by the elite men and the masses at 10.25am.
The course will showcase some of Edinburgh’s most scenic and historic sites including the Scott Monument, Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Park.
Rugby League supporters can still sign up to take part in the race via www.greatrun.org and are being encouraged to raise money for the RFL Benevolent Fund.
The closing date for entries is Thursday 30 April at 8am.
Rugby League media aim to practice what they preach at Magic
Members of the Rugby League media will be aiming to practice what they preach this Saturday (2 May) when a number of them take part in the first ever engage Fans’ Tag Tournament as part of the Magic Weekend in Edinburgh.
Captained by The People and League Express’ Gareth Walker, the side will wear the new PUMA England shirt and boast a star-studded line-up including The Independent’s Dave Hadfield, the Sunday Mirror’s David Burke, Yorkshire Post’s John Ledger, Ray French and Dave Woods from the BBC and BBC Radio Five Live’s George Riley.
The Rugby League media side is one of 16 teams taking part in the tournament which will take place on pitches adjacent to Murrayfield stadium from 12.30pm on Saturday. It will be finished in time for the first game of the day – Salford City Reds versus Harlequins which kicks off at 3pm.
Thirteen Super League sides will also be represented in the competition that will see supporters playing alongside former players.
Legends who have signed up to take part include Paul Sculthorpe and Mike Bennett (St Helens), Gary Mercer and Alan Tait (both Leeds), Graham Steadman (Castleford Tigers), Allan Bateman (Warrington Wolves) and Jamie Bloem (Huddersfield Giants). Former British Lion Scott Hastings and international full-back Rowen Shepherd will also be turning out for a Scotland representative side.
Despite the impressive array of stars expected to take part in the tournament, BBC Radio Five Live’s George Riley is confident the media side can win the competition and has singled out a few star names for special treatment.
George Riley said: “The media team will be serious contenders as we’re a team littered with elite athletes who will be ready to hit their peak this Saturday. Out wide we have some real pace in League Weekly’s Paul Bennett and Radio Leeds’ James Deighton and I expect Radio Manchester’s Trevor Hunt to be the brains behind the operation.
“My only disappointment is that we’re not going to come face-to-face in the group stages with Huddersfield’s Jamie Bloem or Saints’ Paul Sculthorpe. Bloemy has put on more then a few pounds since retiring so surely will be a weak link for the Giants and although Scully may be a two-time Man of Steel winner I bet he’s never faced a defence as fearsome as Ray French and Dave Hadfield before!
“My message to supporters is get there early so you can see some true stars turn out in the new England kit.”
