Saints cruised to their 17th win of the season with a crushing 42-10 defeat of Wakefield Trinity at Belle Vue.

Led superbly by Kyle Eastmond and real go to mentality from the pack men, Daniel Anderson’s charges never looked in danger of relinquishing their remarkable winning run.

Weathering an early Wakefield storm, they raced into a 30-0 lead at half time thanks in the main to the half back partnership of Leon Pryce and the very lively Eastmond.

The duo set tries up for Chris Flannery, Jon Wilkin and James Roby before the latter turned provider for both James Graham and Paul Clough.

Although Ferres and Drew crossed for Wakefield in the second half, an Eastmond 80 yarder and a four-pointer from Keiron Cunningham made sure the Saints stretched their advantage at the top of the engage Super League.

Pre game, Saints, Sean Long missed out with mumps whilst Willie Talau’s hamstring was still too tight to play.

That meant a starting spot at scrum half for Kyle Eastmond, Lee Gilmour came in at centre and a place on the bench for 19-year-old prop forward Jacob Emmitt.

Wakefield fielded a strong side as they aimed to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat in the Challenge Cup Semi Final to Hull and hopefully get back in the play off picture.

Both sides started at a blistering pace but it was Wakefield who had the early pressure as a repeat set in Saints’ 10 metre caused several dangerous moments.

Ryan Atkins twice had the opportunity to draw the winger but both Gidley and Gardner consistently closed the door. Wellens then tidied up after a nice chip through from Drew.

Minutes later Kyle Eastmond tested Blaymire with a high ball.

And Kyle was the architect of Saints’ first score. On the last tackle, a nice drive and off-load from Graham found its way to Kyle who then worked a run around with Keiron Cunningham for Flannery to go over. Kyle with the conversion.

On 21 minutes, Kyle fired a lovely flat ball to send in Wilkin - again converted - to make it 12-0.

Kyle was having an excellent game finding gaps all over the field and laying the platform for two scores. With 16 minutes to go, he kicked a fine 40:20 to put Saints deep in Wakefield territory.

And, they made it pay – Roby burrowing over from close distance – again converted by Eastmond.

James Graham then made it 22-0 when he twisted over from Roby’s short ball.

With two minutes to go, Roby then provided it on a plate for Paul Clough to clock up his 10th of the season.

Half Time: Wakefield 0 Saints 30

Five minutes into the second half, Wakefield got their first score of the game – Brett Ferres touching down in the corner under pressure from Gardner and Gidley. Brough wide the conversion.

But Kyle then intercepted and went 80 yards to restore Saints’ 30 point lead and notch his sixth of the season in the process.

With 20 minutes to go, Wakefield reduced the deficit when Brad Drew twisted over from close range and Brough converted.

Eastmond left the field on 67 minutes after taking an awkward knock in a tackle.

Keiron Cunningham then battered his way over a couple of minutes later and Gidley converted to make it 42-10.

Francis Meli was placed on report for an alleged high tackle late in the game but it didn’t dampen a solid day’s work for the Saints.

Daniel Anderson said: “We were the one team out of the four that played in the Challenge Cup Semi Finals to put something together. We played well for around 50 minutes before, understandably, fatigue and ill-discipline set in.

“I thought Kyle did ok. It’s easy to play when you are 30-0 up at half time but I thought he took his score really well. There are things he needs to do to improve and we will be working on that.”

Daniel also added that Kyle left the field with a calf injury and Paul Sculthorpe with the reoccurrence of a hamstring problem. Sean Long should be fit to return next week.
