Saints Academy Clinch Shield

28th Aug 2008, 9:21am

St Helens Rugby League Academy 48 v 18 Salford City Reds Rugby League Academy

Saints Academy wrapped up the Gillette Rugby League League Leaders Title in emphatic style on Wednesday night with a nine try demolition of the Salford City Reds.

With the City Reds having to win by 208 clear points to stop the Saints claiming the title, it was an opportunity for the coaching staff to look at some of the fringe players in the squad.

So in came John Jenkins and Scott Hale for their full debuts and there was a scoring debut for Anthony Walker off the bench.

There was no discernable difference in performance, however, as the team steamrollered to a 20 – 0 half time lead.

In fact the Saints were 32 points to the good before the City Reds got a sniff of the line.

There was a brace of tries for both Tommy Johnson and Gareth Frodsham with further tries to Ste Neild, Joe Molyneux, Dave Sutton and the outstanding Karl Forster.

Scott Clarke capped a fine display with five conversions.

The title means that the Junior Academy now have an extra week off to prepare for the visit of the old enemy in a double header with the Reserves on the weekend of the 13th/14th September.
