Saints Academy Blow Quins Away

25th Aug 2008, 2:00pm

St Helens Junior Academy 72 v 18 Harlequins Junior Academy

By Graham Henthorne, Team Manager

A twelve try demolition job by the Junior Academy made it three wins out of three this season over their southern rivals and 250 points to boot.

After an arduous journey north which saw them arrive only 40 minutes before kick off, Quins were always going to be up against it, and after they bombed a chance in the fifth minute they were never a serious threat to the Saints.

Six tries in each half from this young side took them clear at the top of the table and barring a loss to Salford on Wednesday night of biblical proportions, the League Leaders’title is theirs for another season.

Jack Bradbury scored a brace, the second the result of great interpassing down the left with Martin Waring.

Ben Karalius jinked his way in for a brace, and Warren Thompson crashed in for a hat-trick. There were further tries for Danny Langtree, Scott Hale, Joe Molyneux, Lee Gaskell and Karl Ashall with the last two kicking 11 goals between them. The twelfth was the very first of his career for Tommy Johnson.

This win was built around the forward dominance served up by Andy Yates and Ste Lucas down the middle. Ably supported by Mike Welsby and big Dave Lyon the pack allowed Gaskell and Karalius to weave their magic.

Karl Forster worried the defence at every opportunity and Danny Langtree had his best game for a while.

But the Man of the Match went again to Warren Thompson. His support play and tenacious tackling as usual were an inspiration to everyone around him.
