Huddersfield Giants Reserves 10 v 48 St Helens Reserves
By Graham Henthorne, Team Manager
Thanks to the efforts of that lot from the other side of Billinge Lump the Saints knew when they started against the Giants that victory would assure them of the League Leaders’ title.
Whilst you would expect that to be motivation enough it is sometimes hard to get yourself into gear against a side you know you can beat and especially against a side that has only travelled with 13 players.
Consequently the Saints found themselves behind, and deservedly so, after five minutes. But the forwards started to do the hard yards and a completion rate of 90% started to take its toll on the opposition.
Saints took the lead on 13 minutes through Jake Emmitt’s debut try and were never seriously troubled again.
Alex Asher scored his first after Paul Johnson had straightened up the attack well and Johnson scored himself dummying and stretching out to touchdown on the left.
Two tries in the closing minutes of the half took the game away from the Giants despite Jamie Foster having a nightmare with the boot by his own high standards.
Shaun Quinn reacted quickest to score from Jamie Ellis’s knocked down cross kick after Phil Baines had split the defence with a 60 metre burst.
Then Baines scored himself beating his opposite number at the corner from a scrum.
The second half was a mirror image of the first with the Giants threatening a comeback with a score after a break from half way.
The Saints then ran away with it scoring four further converted tries.
Alex Asher got his second, Jamie Foster beat his man to score in the corner after Andrew Dixon had gone 70 metres on an interception.
Further tries from Alex McClurg and Jake Emmitt’s second completed the rout.
After a scratchy start the pack exerted itself and the ball control so missing on Wednesday night strangled the life out of the increasingly weary and frustrated Giants.
Cooper, Frodsham and Emmitt shone for the Saints and Baines was always a threat chiming into the line.
This victory sets up a mouth-watering double header in the first round of the play off series for both the Reserves and the Junior Academy.
Both sides will face the Old Enemy for the right to go straight to the Grand Final. The matches will be played at the GPW Recruitment Stadium with a likely date of Saturday September 13 (TBC). Don’t miss ‘em they’re going to be dynamite.
