Liverpool World Cup

LIVERPOOL became the centre of the Rugby League world in July with more than 500 young people enjoying the game in glorious sunshine.

The 15th Liverpool Tag Rugby League World Cup saw a fine standard of Rugby League, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Liverpool College lifted the World Cup after a tense final with the superb St Austin’s, while Woolton Juniors won the Bowl and King David were awarded the Fair Play Cup.

The showpiece event is organised by Merseyside Fire & Rescue service who spend months delivering Tag Rugby League sessions in school along with Saints and then penning in fixtures and arranging the big day.

Mike Hagen, Deputy Chief Fire Office of Merseyside Fire and Rescue, said: “This event continues to impress, the work of the Fire Service and Community Saints helped the World Cup run superbly. The result on the day is 30 teams playing Rugby League, but coaching and support has been provided for many weeks and it was wonderful to see the improvement in their skills and teamwork.”

The entire Saints squad made the journey to Liverpool University Playing Fields to watch the action.

Prop James Graham said: “I’ve been coming to this tournament for a few years now and the Liverpool school have improved immensely. The standard throughout was impressive and I know some of the lads were surprised to see so many good Rugby League players in the area.”

Community Saints staff officiated on the day and the sportsmanship and attitude of the Liverpool youngsters was superb. Players who shone in the tournament were encouraged to join the four new Liverpool development teams with Saints keeping a close eye on their progress.
Coaching across Liverpool will continue with more than 3,000 youngsters now enjoying Rugby League in the city.
