St Helens Rugby League Club and Helena Partnerships have been working together for the last four years on a range of community projects.
Recently, five ‘Dream Teams’ from Four Acre, The Avenues, Winter Grove, New Street and Moss Bank celebrated the end of their spring community projects with tickets to watch the Saints v Castleford Tigers match.
The 8-15 year olds have spent the last few months working on green projects including makeovers of wasteland, making up hanging baskets for tenants at Helena’s sheltered schemes and helping out at community events.
Adult volunteers who worked with the youngsters were brought onto the pitch to be presented with ‘Community Leader Awards’ from Helena Partnership’s Chairman, Peter Styche.
The DAN (Delivering Active Neighbourhoods) team will be working with a variety of partners on projects over the summer, as Saints’ Community Foundation Manager, Gordon Pennington, explains:
“Saints will help Helena to develop a sports based programme of events on Helena estates and at Saints throughout August.
“These will include the Summer Gym project and Dream Team activities. The Summer Gym project is a free activity that enables young people to enjoy their holidays whilst participating in something constructive.
“Activities involved will include football, badminton, basketball, weight training, fitness training and nutritional advice.
“Dream Team activities will include gardening, clean up days, helping older people in the local community and art projects."
