The XIII Men!

When Wigan and Saints line up to face each other on Friday, it won’t be the third meeting of the two local rivals.

Key players from both outfits went head to head on a poster designed by students from St Helens College.

Commissioned by Sky as part of their National Award Photography course, they designed a ‘head 2 head’ poster based on the X-Men films featuring the likes of Trent Barrett and Paul Sculthorpe.

And, their sessions with both Saints and Wigan were filmed for Sky’s Boots n All programme.

“The Wigan v St Helens games are so eagerly anticipated that the fixture has almost 'iconic' status in terms of our expectations,” explained Sky’s Angela Powers. “We don't need to read team-sheets or previews to know what the game will deliver - passion, pride and intense rivalry.

“So, if the game were a movie how would you sell it? I asked photography students at St Helens College to create a poster that would capture all of these elements. I wanted them to look to 'iconic' movie images for inspiration. What they came up with fitted the bill perfectly. It is based on a movie that pits super hero against super hero.

“Taking the letter X and its meaning in roman numerals, they adapted it to relate to rugby league...Xlll men, Super League 13. They adapted the movie's tagline to fit. But for me it was the essence of 'menace' they captured in the eyes of the protagonists in their photographs. They created an image that simply and effectively tells us what to expect on Friday.”

Ste Lucas from St Helens College of Arts added: “The students are very proud of their design and I think you will agree it does the two Super League teams justice. We enjoyed our photo session at Saints would like to thank all the players who modelled for us.”
